Why such large price differences for the same stamp?

Why such large price differences for the same stamp?

We would like to draw your attention to the rarity of classic stamps of exceptional quality, by their rare shade, cancellation or margins.

For these exceptional stamps, the rarity index is 1 in 1000 and the price is 4 to 5 times higher than that of a “normal” stamp. Why?

An example, the 1849 1Fr. carmine Cérès (n ° 6), cancelled:

N° 6 1f carmin Cérès oblitéré avec 4 marges normales

Price: €400

N° 6 1f carmin Cérès oblitéré avec grandes marges équilibrées dont 5 voisins

Prix: 1000€

The first stamp which has 4 “normal” margins is very fine but of standard quality and can be easily found in the trade.

The 2nd stamp has large balanced margins including parts of 5 neighboring stamps. This is extremely rare, and it might take 10 years to come across such a fantastic stamp!

The markets outside France have been much more attentive to this quality index..

In France, collectors are now actively searching for such quality and the demand for such stamps has increased significantly.
